Audition

This short animation from 1976 was made by Bill Mather, a Bristol-based animator. It pioneered the technique of animating to an unscripted conversation, which in this case was a clandestine recording of his own son’s choirboy audition. This took place in St Mary Redcliffe church, with the choirmaster Bryan Anderson. The film was the pilot for a BBC series that became Animated Conversations, which in turn led to the TV series Creature Comforts.

This excerpt  is of an improvisation on a theme of Dr Adrian Beaumont who was Professor of Music at Bristol University at the time. Earlier that year she had also recorded in Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral, where Richard Lea, is currently Organist.
