Hayden Payne has just started his time at the Royal College of Music and is learning the organ with the head of department David Graham. Hayden was interested in music from the young age of 5 and was a member of his primary school choir. He then joined Bath Abbey Melody Makers performing in many different venues and went on tour to Liverpool Cathedral. At the age of 8 Hayden started taking piano lessons and during his time in the Melody Makers he fell in love with the organ. He was a dedicated member of Bath Abbey Boys choir for 4 years. During his time in the choir they sang for the Archbishop of Canterbury, BBC Songs of Praise live TV broadcast, and radio broadcasts. He also sung in many different churches such as Liverpool Cathedral, Liverpool Metropolitan, St Marys Redcliffe, Chapel Royal Hampton Court, and even went on tour to the Netherlands. Hayden has sung many solos and was even appointed Head Chorister. He has performed under the direction of Peter King, Shean Bowers and Huw Williams.
During Hayden’s time at secondary school he played piano for school mass. He also played the organ for their annual carol services at St John’s Catholic Church. Hayden spent his Sundays either at Bath Abbey or Manchester Cathedral by reading or playing for the congregation as well as page turning for the organists when needed. He was awarded a full organ scholarship to one of the top music schools in Britain, Chetham’s School of Music studying the organ with Director of Music and Organist at Manchester Cathedral Christopher Stokes. During his time at Chetham’s, Hayden has regularly played for their Founders Day Service, Weekly assemblies and Christmas music. He has played for members of the British Council Office and was awarded with the Mark Masters Mason award and was appointed the junior organ scholar at Manchester Cathedral allowing him to play for more services within the cathedral. On top of all his studies at Chetham’s, Hayden ran the Chetham’s Community choir. Hayden has played for services and performed recitals in Bath Abbey.
Hayden finished his studies at Chetham’s last July by accompanying the Chetham’s Symphony Orchestra and chorus in Walton’s Belshazzar’s Feast. Since moving to London, Hayden was Acting Director of Music at St Simon’s Stock in Putney. Since leaving Putney, Hayden plays organs all round London filling in for services. This summer Hayden also has given recitals in Bristol at Christ Church with St Ewen and St Mary’s Redcliffe, and has started his series of recitals this year at Bath Abbey.
